Will Tiger roar at the British Open?

After a month of warm temperatures and sunny skies, the unpredictable weather suddenly changed almost on cue this weekend as Tiger Woods was greeted by chilly, rainy skies. He had postponed his first practice session at Turnberry just because of it. The world’s No. 1-ranked golfer is back in action after a long lay-off. He remains a prohibitive favorite at the upcoming British Open, starting this week.

Tiger Woods managed to get his first glance at Turnberry course. He teed off without warming up, leaving it for another better day. Only after a few cursory practice swings, and after swatting a long iron for his first and only strong shot, he was off. The golfer was accompanied by caddie Steve Williams, both braving the elements in shorts.

This is probably the first time ever since 2006 that Woods has come at any major championship venue without having seen and studied the course. That year, he grabbed his 3rd British Open title. It was at Royal Liverpool.

Located on the West Coast of scenic Scotland, Turnberry has thus far hosted the Open event just on three occasions in the past, the last time in 1994. This was the year before Tiger Woods appeared in his first one at St. Andrews. Last year, he missed the British Open recovering from a major reconstructive surgery on knee. It was also the first time that he had not appeared in a major since 1996. Ireland’s Padraig Harrington seized the opportunity to win his second straight Open.

  1. Dave Says:

I did’nt think people watched Tiger anymore. His poor opening round was predictable. This pattern will continue. He is too ambitious and as time wears on an opportunities diminish the pressure will mount and he will self-destruct. He sold his soul to win his last Major on a broken knee and now the devil’s come to collect.
