World number two Phil Mickelson has won the Northern Trust Open by two strokes at Riviera Country Club in California. He finished 12 under after a concluding round 70 but was given the title after chief competitor Jeff Quinney imploded on the back nine. Open winner Padraig Harrington and Ryder Cup team-mate Luke Donald both shot 68 and finished in a draw for third.

Mickelson had lost in a play off a year ago and at the FBR Open two weeks ago. This was a tournament which was really desirable to him. He had a one-stroke lead initially. But JB Holmes birdied the final hole to force a play-off and won on the first extra hole. Mickelson minimized his mistakes and took a three-shot lead to the final hole. He had some solid shots on the back nine. He was happy that he did not make any mistakes and finally won.

Mickelson started the day with a one-stroke advantage over Quinney. After nine holes his fellow citizen overtook him. Mickelson had gone three ahead after a birdie at the par-five opening. Two consecutive birdies from Mickelson got him the lead even though his competitor picked up a shot at the 11th. But ultimately four bogeys in five holes gave the win to the three-time major winner. Winner Mickelson won USD1.116 million for his first victory of the season. It was the 33rd win in his entire career.
