Pablo Martin In His Familiar Zone
Spain’s Pablo Martin’s win in the Portuguese Open at Oitavos Dunes last year won him the title of being the first amateur ever to be victorious in an event on the circuit. Now he aims to imitate Aaron Baddeley at the Australian Open in 1999 and 2000 by following a win as an amateur with a triumphant defence as a professional. Martin has always been very focused. The course record had been equaled before in the day by his fellow citizen Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano. Martin, who rediscovered his form with a 21st-place finish at the US Tour’s Arnold Palmer Invitational last month, still had to play the nervous waiting game in order to find out if his new record would be broken.
David Howell and Paul McGinley managed to shoot 67 and 69 respectively. They have failed to meet the criteria for Masters next week. Another Spaniard, Jose Manuel Lara and Michael Jonzon managed a 64. Frenchman Gregory Bourdy had eight birdies in a 11-hole stretch from the sixth. He just needed one more for a 62. Darren Clarke played his first nine holes in just 30 strokes, which added a 25-foot eagle putt on the 16th to four initial birdies.
