Nick Dougherty Remains On The Top

England’s Nick Dougherty stayed at the top of the leaderboard at the Maybank Malaysian Open after he opened the tournament with a 10-under-par 62 at the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club. Dougherty managed to maintain a two-stroke advantage over Simon Dyson and Australian Marcus Fraser. Both the players carded eight-under 64s in the morning.

Nick Dougherty has set the standard earlier and recorded his best competitive round. He parred his first hole before he got into gear with three successive birdies to move to three under. He then embarked on a run of seven successive birdies from the 16th to the fourth that placed him to 10 under. This raised the chance of his becoming the first player to shoot 59 on the main European Tour.

Dougherty felt that he drove and putted the ball really well. Though his iron play was not upto the mark, but the good thing was that his misses were all in the right places. He also admitted that he did think of shooting a 59 after moving to 10 under for the day with just five holes to play.

Daniel Vancsik of Argentina was all alone in fourth on seven under with New Zealand’s Mark Brown, Argentina’s Rafael Echenique, India’s SSP Chowrasia and defending champion Peter Hedblom of Sweden a further shot back on six under.
