John Wagner Manages To Retain Lead

Johnson Wagner has managed to retain the lead after the third round at the Shell Houston Open where Chad Campbell Bob Estes were challengers. Wagner carded a three-under-par 69 to move to 15 under par. Wagner entered the third round with a three-stroke lead. He started gradually with three pars and a birdie on the fourth. He then shot a bogey five on the fifth when he missed a six-foot par putt. He then had three birdies in four holes from the ninth through to the 12th. Initially he was a bit nervous but later got a grip and managed a lead.

Bob Estes had began the round eight strokes behind. He erased five of them with a front-nine 31. He had three straight birdies then followed from the 11th to the 13th. Campbell caught Wagner at 12 under when he holed out with a wedge from 88 yards. He again got caught at 13, 14 and 15 under and finally made a bogey on the 17th, where he failed to get up and down from a greenside bunker. Fred Couples, who tied for 36th, pulled even with six others for 10th by signing for a 67.
