Another title to add to Nick Faldo’s six majors; it’s ‘Sir’

Nick Faldo has been conferred a knighthood for his valuable services to golf and his excellent track record. Incidentally, he is the only athlete who received one of Britain’s highest honors this year on the monarch’s birthday.

Ecstatic at the announcement, Faldo stated:

“I am delighted that I have bee given a knighthood. I’m feeling more than a little bit humbled to have been selected for this great honor. It has come as a pleasant surprise to me. The reaction from my children, friends and family has indeed made this a very special moment for me.”

Faldo is only the second professional golfer to get a knighthood. He follows in the footsteps of Sir Henry Cotton. After winning his first professional title almost three decades ago he added 46 more wonderful wins worldwide - comprising three British Opens and three Masters. Faldo was the captain of the European Ryder Cup team, which lost to the US at Valhalla last year. In 1987, he got a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

The 51-year-old golfer has made a host of entrepreneurial moves, including golf courses design assignments all over the world. He also works as a television commentator.

“I’ve been playing golf for some 35 years or more now at the highest level,”

he remarked.

“It has always been my aim to do my utmost for developing this game both in Britain and abroad.”
